These are working ice fishing decoys from the cold water lands of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These decoys were carved by my father who has been carving these for over 60 years. Wonderfully hand carved, weighted and balanced these decoys are typical of a long standing folk tradition of the area. These decoys will swim in a circle, climbing and diving when pulled on a string, they are not floating/standstill decoys (danglers). Wonderful forms and originality of individual designs and thought were always placed into their making by my dad. I had spent many hours of my childhood in an ice shanty pulling decoys on a string and letting them float to a standstill only to watch a northern pike float in the hole to check out the decoy and occasionally strike it! (almost making me fall off the stool from the shock of seeing it rock back and forth with the decoy in his mouth!) These wooden decoys vary in size, all have metal fins and tail (copper) (positional to vary the glide path/swim in the water) . My father always woodburned his initials/monogram (JH for Jesse Harriger) into the underside.
